I cannot count how many time I have been asked, “Why is my site not on the first page of Google when I Google it?” The answer is that it takes a long time and a lot of changes to get to a place where Google lists you on the first page of a search.
First thing is to understand the difference between SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) on a Goole search page.
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
The first thing to do is to pick a name that domain name that is relevant to what you do. We like to use short names that are easy to type but Search engines prefer longer domain names that say more about what you do or sell.
But what does Search engines look for?
Make sure you have an SEO plan. Look at keywords people would use to look for your product. Make sure to check this at least once a year. Google has tools like Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends that can help you to find the relevant words to use. Make sure that you write them into the text, and use them as headers on your pages. Your content needs to be unique and relevant. Search engines pick up when sites copy other sites, when your info is unique, search engines will give it a higher ranking when searches are being done. Take a look at what competitors do and take some tips.
A second thing that will improve your ranking is how many other sites link to your site. Start to write a blog with relevant content, this will help to bring customers to your site. When they like the content, they will share it, that brings more customers.
What can you write about?
1. Case studies
If you are selling wood for braai or fireplaces, do a case study on what types of wood works best for braai or fireplace use.
Interview some customers about the products you sell and get their opinions. People value opinions, more people buy a product because of recommendations than ever before. Use this to your advantage.
Run some surveys and ask some relevant questions. Use free survey software like Survey Monkey to help to do this. Feedback is important.
